Winter Landscape and Garden Care

Colder temperatures are just around the corner in Clayton, NC and with it comes quite a bit of care in your landscape and garden during the winter months. Here are a few tips as you prepare for the winter season.

November and December Tips:

  • Remember to continue watering newly planted evergreens, trees, and shrubs.
  • Do not forget about your fall clean ups. This includes cutting back perennials, removing annuals, clearing beds and turf of leaf accumulations.
  • Continue raking lawn to remove late-falling leaves. Wet leaves that stay on the lawn all winter will kill or damage turf areas.
  • Shutting down your irrigation system before freezing temps arrive will ensure your system is in the best possible condition for next year.
  • Last call for bulbs. It is still not too late. If planted in November, make sure to add mulch and protect from freezing temperatures.
  • Winter is a time for finishing up your garden clean up and planning for next spring. Collect all your gardening tools and clean them before storing away. Check tools for wear or damage and make list of those that need replacing. Remember, gardening tools make great holiday gifts!
  • Dormant Pruning: the best time to reduce and renew shrubs and ornamental plants is during the winter months.
  • If you enjoy birds in your landscape, remember the trees provide shelter for them during winter storms. Evergreen trees are especially helpful. Set up bird feeders and keep them filled with the kinds of seeds that will attract the birds you want. If you can supply the birds with fresh water throughout the winter, they will stay around your yard all winter. Black oil sunflower seeds are affordable and are especially attractive to cardinals, blue jays, chickadees, nuthatches, purple finches, and grosbeaks.
